HARDWARE COMPONENTS

On my page of this wiki I will explain a little about the most important hardware components of a modern computer.

THE MOTHERBOARD:

  • Meeting place for all parts of the computer
  • Large electronic circuit board designed to house the CPU
  • Provides a central point for other electronic components to connect in order to communicate with each other.

THE CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT(CPU):

  • Place where most calculations take place.
  • Housed in a single chip called a microprocessor.

Two typical components of a CPU are the following:


  • The Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU), which performs arithmetic and logical operations.
  • The Control Unit (CU), which extracts instructions from memory and decodes and executes them, calling on the ALU when necessary.

THE GRAPHICS/VIDEO CARD:

  • Used primarily for 3D applications.
  • Takes binary data from CPU and turns it into an image that we can see (rendering)
  • Performs floating point calculations which are crucial for 3D rendering.

THE RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY(RAM):


  • Considered Random Access because you can access any memory cell directly if you know the row and column that intersect that cell.
  • Two types of RAM, SRAM(Static RAM) and DRAM(Dynamic RAM)
  • DRAM needs to be refreshed thousands of times and SRAM does not so SRAM is faster but DRAM is most common.
  • SRAM is expensive.
